Friend Or Froyo: How To Not Go Overboard When Buying Frozen Yoghurt

Friend Or Froyo: How To Not Go Overboard When Buying Frozen Yoghurt

Frozen yoghurt: both my best friend and the bane of my existence.

Well, not really, but I do tend to go a little overboard when it comes to the frozen treat.

Froyo is always praised for being a healthy snack as it is, apparently, 98 per cent fat free, with only 30 calories per 28 grams (according to Tutti Fruitti’s website, anyway).

However, what happens when we keep spotting new flavours (gingerbread anyone?) and soon have a heaped serving on our hands?

To help those, who, like me, have an obsession with multiple flavours and toppings, I’ve devised a few tips to keep Froyo treat sized and not ‘a week’s’ sized.

1. Pick the smallest cup size.

This one is pretty obvious, but it’s a good start: if you go for a smaller size, you’ll end up with less. However, this doesn’t mean you are allowed to fill the entire cup, unfortunately. Some stores even have a smaller size behind the counter, if you ask nicely.

2. Pick your toppings carefully… and maybe pick them first.

I have the biggest sweet tooth, meaning I always gravitate towards the brownie pieces and KitKats… okay, and the gummy bears too. But one of my favourite things to have with Froyo is actually watermelon. By picking the healthy options of fruits and maybe a few popping pearls you’ll be thanking yourself later when you avoid the Froyo food coma.

You can also trick yourself into getting less by visiting the topping station first. Fill up your bowl with your favourite fruits and follow it with just one or two flavours of yoghurt.

3. Keep to budget.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has ended up with over ten dollars’ worth of Froyo… or at least I hope not. The best way to keep Froyo cheap is to limit how much you’re allowed. If you stick to a budget of five dollars I promise you’ll thank me later when you can buy more than two minute noodles for lunch. Feel free to ask the staff to weigh your yoghurt to check where you’re at as you move along the stations.

4. Check nutritional information.

Tutti Frutti is just one of the stores that make it easy to check nutritional information. Not only can you see the amount of sugar and fat per flavour online, they also suggest great toppings to accompany each one.

Just remember, with all the hard work that you do, you deserve some sweets, so don’t be afraid to add in that little bit of cookie dough on occasion either.
