Facts: Kylie Jenner Is Now the World's Youngest "Self-Made" Billionaire

From lip kits to cosmetics, the Kylie Jenner empire has been a screaming success.

Kylie Jenner has made history by overtaking Mark Zuckerberg as the world's youngest self-made billionaire, according to Forbes.

Jenner is worth an estimated $USD1 billion (a bit over $AUD1.4 billion) meaning she's made around $USD47 million (around $AUD67 million) for every year she's lived on this earth. Obviously, most of this fortune was made in the last five years (since she was 16) but considering she has the world's most successful momager on side, Kris Jenner, her money pot probably didn't start at zero.

So, how did she do it?

Forbes claims she's "self-made". However, for most of us, that often invokes the "rags to riches" assumption.

In the case of Kylie Jenner, daughter of an Olympian and reality TV star, sister of the world's highest paid supermodel and half-sister to the Kardashian klan, that just isn't true.

(Technically, the term "self-made" doesn't actually mean you were poor until you weren't. It's defined by Merriam-Webster as "made such by one's own actions" or "having achieved success or prominence by one's own efforts".)

What Jenner did do, however, is leverage the fame she gained from being associated with her famous family, cultivated a wildly popular social media presence, and launched a successful cosmetic brand. She certainly didn't do this without the help of her famous family and friends, but it's ultimately her star power that drove companies to partner with her and her products, which equaled more money. 

"It's the power of social media," Jenner told Forbes.

"I had such a strong reach before I was able to start anything."

"I see [Kylie Cosmetics] going very far," she added.

"I work really hard."

Given the oversaturation of Jenner's presence in the media, few would doubt that.
