Facebook’s "FarmVille" Is Getting Axed in December

2009 me is crying

Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t take anything else from us, Zynga has announced that they’re permanently shutting down FarmVille because Adobe is killing ofF Flash player.

After 11 years of planting crops and collecting eggs, the original Facebook version of the game will be killed off on 31 December this year.

In July, Facebook also announced that it was no longer going to support Flash games due to Adobe’s removal of the software, so while we knew this was coming, I’m not sure any of us were ready.

While this is devastating news, it does feel like an eternity ago that we were all sitting at our parent’s PCs till early hours of the morning while we waited for our crops to grow.

With 20 per cent of all Facebook users tending to their farms since the games release and 12 per cent of Facebook’s total revenue in 2011 brought in through the game, FarmVille definitely left its mark and made Zynga (the game’s developer) a social media game giant.

It seems to be a distant memory for most of us, but it might be because of the games sudden spike in success and then quick decline. After just three years of booming popularity, in 2011 Facebook users began to lose interest in the game and all of us just started to sort of... forget.

If the news of FarmVille’s sudden departure has made you nostalgic, don’t worry, you’ve still got some time left to revisit your old ranch (although we’re not sure what state it will be in after this many years).

The game itself doesn’t get switched off until New Years Eve but in-app purchases will be gone by 17 November. If that’s not enough time, you can always play the mobile version of the game, FarmVille 2, from your phone.
