Facebook Will Stamp Out Revenge Porn With New Photo-Matching System

Facebook has announced it will be introducing new software to combat revenge porn.

The software will be able match previously reported images and instantly remove them from their site. This also goes for Messenger and Instagram too.

It introduces a new option to report a “nude photo of me”, but still requires the person to see the image and then report it.

The new feature comes after a spate of lawsuits in the past few years over revenge porn incidents. The complainants claimed Facebook wasn’t doing enough to counteract the incidents.

In a statement, Facebook's Head of Global Safety, Antigone Davis, said the company had convened more than 150 safety organisations from around the world for advice on how to improve.

Facebook will also "partner with safety organisations to offer resources and support to the victims of this behaviour."

Revenge porn refers to the instance where compromising images are leaked on social media of someone who did not previously consent to those photos appearing publicly. It disproportionately affects women and is considered a sex crime in many jurisdictions.
