Facebook Is Losing Its Grasp On Teenagers To Instagram

Though still the biggest game in town, it might only be a matter of time before Facebook is overtaken by another social media giant (as far as teens are concerned).

A new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center finds Facebook’s popularity amongst teens is declining.

However, Mark Zuckerberg shouldn’t begin to freak out just yet. Of the 1,060 teenagers polled for the survey, 71 per cent still use Facebook. That’s compared to the 73 per cent who claimed to use Facebook in 2014’s survey.

Also, Facebook owns the social media platform snapping at their heels: Instagram.

Instagram is used by 52 per cent of teens, while Snapchat follows close behind at 41 per cent. Twitter and Google+ are both used by 33 per cent of teens.

The popularity of these platforms was not measured in 2014 by the Pew Research Center.

Though Pew’s report actually suggests the anecdotal decline of Facebook’s popularity amongst teens has been exaggerated, surveys conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates suggest fewer and fewer teens using FB every year since 2012.

What say you? Where do you spend most of your social media hours?

An earlier version of this post neglected to mention Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012. Student Edge regrets the error.
