Nostalgia overload.

This post is presented in partnership with Sanity.

Now that it’s officially the ‘20s, the 2000s felt like some wonderful fever dream. Between the flip phones, frosted tips and Blockbuster video stores, it was definitely the peak time to be alive.

If you’re missing some of those good ol’ days, we reckon it’s time you turn back the clock and celebrate the 2000s the only way we know how: a movie night.

From discontinued snacks and cult movies to facemasks and PJs, here’s everything you’ll need for a 2000s-themed movie night with your mates.

Which movies should I watch?

First things first: movies. You’re gonna need to pick the best that the 2000s had to offer to have a killer movie night.

We know that there were some average movies from the 2000s, but there were also some bangin’ cult classics that the whole crew are going to love.

To help you out, here are our favourite movies from the 2000s:

  • Mean Girls: Lindsay Lohan stars in this high school comedy about breaking into the popular group. This one is filled with one-liners you'll still hear your mates quoting today.
  • Napoleon Dynamite: Jon Heder is Napoleon Dynamite, an awkward teen who has trouble fitting in. There’s really no way to accurately describe this film, just watch it.
  • Hot Rod: Andy Samberg is an accident-prone wannabe stuntman trying to gain his stepdad’s respect. Insanely quotable (cool beans).
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Scott Pilgrim is a musician who must fight off his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers’ army of ex-boyfriends. Starring Michael Cera, Chris Evans and Aubrey Plaza, it’s one you won't want to miss.
  • How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days: Easily one of the best chick flicks going, Kate Hudson must write an article on how to lose a man in 10 days. Matthew McConaughey on the other hand is challenged by a co-worker to get a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. It’s amazing.
  • Freaky Friday: Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis play a mother and daughter who wake up one day shocked to find out they’ve swapped bodies. Sounds ridiculous but trust us, it’s a great movie.

Sure, you could watch them on a streaming service, but that just wouldn’t be very 2000s. You’re gonna want to bust out a DVD player for that authentic noughties feel.

All the movies on our list are available at Sanity, so get one (or get them all) to nail that 2000s vibe.

What should we eat?

It’s not a movie night without food, but it needs to be 2000s-themed—none of this Uber Eats gourmet food delivered straight to your door.

You could kick things off with pizza (that’s a movie night staple). In fact, you could even throw in some Potato Smiles for a trip down memory lane.

For dessert, nothing says noughties like vanilla ice cream and chocolate Ice Magic.

Round it all off with a block of chocolate and some lollies like Pez Dispensers, Zombie Chews, Zappos, Push Pops and WarHeads.

What should we wear?

Pyjamas all the way, no argument. PJs are all about comfort and you’re gonna want that if you’re blasting through movies well past midnight.

If you’re making the night more of a party than a sleepover, ask everyone to dress up in their favourite clothes from the 2000s. Studded belts, butterfly clips, cargo pants, dresses worn over jeans and platform thongs. It really was the best fashion.

At the very least, you’re gonna have a good laugh.

What other activities should we do?

What else do you do at a 2000s movie when you aren’t eating? Facemasks, duh.

Okay, if you’re not into pampering yourself, take some time out for a movie half-time break with some video games straight from your childhood. Crash Bandicoot 4 or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater were remastered for the latest gens of PlayStation and Xbox.

Both are available at Sanity for a bargain so get around them to complete your 2000s night.

What kinda room layout?

Finally, you have to get the room layout just right. If you’re wanting to really go authentic 2000s, locate yourself one of those Disney-themed foldout couches (what a dream they were). Colourful inflatable couches are also peak 2000s, so better get yourself one of those too.

There you have it, everything you need to set up the perfect 2000s-themed movie night for you and your friends. To get all the best films, TV series and games, check out everything Sanity offers.
