Dr. Luke Breaks His Twitter Silence Over Kesha's Abuse Allegations

Trigger warning: This article discusses rape and sexual abuse.
Dr. Luke (aka Luke Gottwald) - the music producer Kesha accused of sexual, physical, verbal and emotional abuse - has finally broken his silence on her accusations with a series of Tweets. Gottwald no doubt felt urged to speak after numerous industry figures made public their support of Kesha this week. That includes Taylor Swift, who donated $US250, 000 for “any of [Kesha’s] financial needs during this trying time.” With his Tweets, Dr. Luke has attempted to express understanding to those “speaking out”, saying he “appreciate[s] their compassion.” However, he follows up by suggesting Kesha is “motivated by money” in her legal venture. A selection of his Tweets follows: For those who haven’t been following along, Kesha had been seeking an injunction to break her recording contract with Sony, with whom she is yet to fulfil a six-album contract. She had attempted to nullify the contract, on account of Dr. Luke’s alleged history of abuse. (She claims he drugged and raped her when she was 18 years of age.) Though Sony had offered another producer for Kesha to collaborate with, she expressed a fear that the company would only promote her music if she worked with Dr. Luke (a reliable hit-maker for the company). On Friday, the judge ruled against Kesha, inspiring a petition to boycott Sony that has so far accumulated more than 237,000 signatures. Artists like Lady Gaga, Lorde, Demi Lovato and many more sided with the “Tik Tok” singer by promoting the #FreeKesha hashtag on social media. Though Taylor Swift has been publicly silent on the matter, her undeniably generous donation to Kesha was met with much acclaim. However, Demi Lovato seemingly subtweeted Swift’s gesture, saying, “Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I'll be impressed.” Swifties promptly attacked Lovato for her statement. She offered the following response: “Not everyone has 250k to just give to people. Would love to but I didn’t grow up with money and def haven’t made as much as her,” she said. “At least I speak up about s*** that’s uncomfortable to talk about rather than trying to be politically correct 24/7.” Lovato has since taken to Instagram to clarify her thoughts. “As most people know, I tend to get fired up about the things I believe in, and although my heart and intentions are always in the right place, unfortunately sometimes my passion gets the best of me and causes me to say things that I probably shouldn't say,” she began. “Our focus should be on the topic of victims of sexual and physical abuse being afraid to come forward with their stories. "Ultimately, the message I want people to hear is it's okay to come forward with your abuse and if you do decide to take action, you are not alone." In as complicated a story as this, at least we can all agree on that last point. Are you experiencing sexual assault or domestic and family violence? Seeking to support someone who is?
