Taylor Swift Donates $250K To Support Kesha

Trigger warning: This article discusses rape and violence against women.

Taylor Swift has offered Kesha $US250,000 following a judge’s ruling that she must uphold her recording contract with Dr. Luke and Sony.

This, despite Kesha’s allegations that Dr. Luke drugged and raped her when she was 18 years old.

A spokesperson for Swift told Billboard that the donated money is “a show of support” to help Kesha “with any of her financial needs during this trying time.”

The hashtag #FreeKesha has been making its way across the internet since Friday's decision, in solidarity with the beleaguered artist.

Many on social media were specifically calling upon Swift, recent Album of the Year Grammy award-winner and arguably the biggest female artist in the world today, to share in the sentiment.

With this gesture, Swift has joined musicians Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Lorde, Demi Lovato, Lily Allen, Dev Hynes and Kelly Clarkson in decrying Dr. Luke and siding with 28-year-old Kesha Rose Sebert.

However, a cryptic Tweet from Lovato following the announcement by Swift's spokesperson suggests not all in the industry is impressed by Taylor's donation amidst radio silence.

On Friday, Kesha sobbed as a Judge handed down the ruling compelling her to fulfil Sony’s six-album contract.

She had attempted to nullify the contract, on account of Dr. Luke’s – real name Luke Gottwald – alleged history of abuse.

Though Sony had offered another producer for Kesha to collaborate with, she expressed a fear that the company would only promote her music if she worked with Dr. Luke.

As of this writing, a petition to boycott Sony has reached more than 222,000 signatures.

  • This is so sad stuff shouldn't happen like this to any body no matter the circumstances.

  • Thats so sad for Kesha, but Swift giving that money may help Kesha, but its a basic terms of Promoting herself (especially with going onto the radio/news because of it)
