Dog Who Helped Save Eight Lives From Ecuador's Earthquake Dies In Line Of Duty

If you told yourself you wouldn’t cry today, you were lying.

A four-year-old Labrador who helped save eight people following Ecuador’s recent earthquake has died, Mashable reports.

According to the City of Ibarra’s Fire Department Facebook page, Dayko the dog succumbed to heatstroke following his efforts in a rescue operation.

“Our four-legged friend gave his life in the line of duty,” they wrote in tribute to the late canine.

More tragic than the passing of one hero dog, however, is the death of at least 650 people as a result of the Ecuadorian quake (a magnitude 7.8).

Still, in times like these, it’s especially heart-warming and inspiring to remember that there are men, women and animals who put their own lives on the line to save others.

Hats off to all those who risk life and limb when tragedy strikes.

  • It is very sad to hear a rescue dog died in the line of duty and was still doing their task to find people from the earthquake. It just shows the amazing courage they have and how valuable they are. On the flip side we should question why did rescue workers working with the rescue dog take time off to recover from the heat? It is something that needs to be learnt and hope it never happens again.
