Despite All the Hype, "Sea of Thieves" Hasn't Got Everyone Convinced It's a GOTY

Sea of Thieves was on everyone's to-play list. Now, we're not so sure.

It's tough out there for online multiplayer game developers. While you may have some serious hype and a league of players to back it up (see: PUBG), when another game comes along with a slightly more fun concept (see: Fortnite), the players move on.

That's what the makers (Microsoft Studios and Rare) of Sea of Thieves were probably aiming for. But unfortunately for them, video game critics arghh not really feeling the vibe of their new open-world pirate RPG.

Polygon described the game as being a bit stale after a few hours of gameplay.

"I'm sad to say that the doldrums extend into the foreseeable future of Sea of Thieves," the review explained. "Sailing across the open ocean becomes less of a thrilling embodiment of cooperation and more of a chore."

Forbes explained that it's an "empty shell of a game" and recommended playing Assassin's Creed Rogue instead.

And it's not just the critics that are disappointed with the final release.

It's still early days, however, so maybe Sea of Thieves still has a chance to stay afloat.
