“Despacito” Just Became the Most Streamed Song In History

“Despacito”, the tune that not even its performer knows all the lyrics to, has just become the most streamed song in history.

According to Billboard, it took just six months for Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s joint to accumulate more than 4.6 billion streams, surpassing the previous global streaming record held by Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”.

But don’t feel too bad for the Biebs: He’s on “Despacito” as well.

It’s just the latest record to be trampled by the crossover hit. “Despacito” holds the title for ‘fastest music video to hit two billion viewers’, notching the milestone in 154 days.

As of this writing, it now sits at 2.6 billion views on YouTube. Considering the most watched video on YouTube is Wiz Khalifa’s video for “See You Again”, at 2.9 billion views, expect another record to tumble in the coming weeks.

Over in the U.S., “Despacito” has been sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 for the past ten weeks. If it can hold on for another seven weeks, it will overtake Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s record-holding “One Sweet Day”.

Here in Australia, “Despacito” is two times Platinum, and has been perched at #1 for the past nine weeks. The current record holder on the ARIA charts is Ed Sheeran’s super-recent “Shape of You”, which was #1 for 15 weeks.

However, according to ARIA, it just needs to hang on for one extra week to take the record for “most weeks at #1 by a foreign language single (1983 – present)” from “Macarena”.

Have a celebratory play below.

Oh, and if you ever wanted to know what the song actually means, check out the translation to “Despacito” (aka “Slowly”) here.
