Daylight Saving Returns: The Mighty Sun Cares Not For The Uninterrupted Sleep Of Puny Queenslanders

Much of Australia had their weekend sleep shortened by precisely one hour on Sunday morning, with the clocks moved forward on account of Daylight Savings Time.

Even Queenslanders – who, along with Western Australians and Northern Territorians, don’t actually observe DST – cruelly saw their slumber disrupted when the Telstra, Vodafone and Optus networks accidentally advanced local phones and alarms by an hour.

Queensland didn’t take the goof in good humour, despite having been "gifted" an extra hour of daylight (kind of).

Australia is now divided up into five different time zones.

New South Wales (excluding Broken Hill), Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT are ahead of the pack with Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).

Half an hour behind them is South Australia and Broken Hill, at Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT).

One hour behind AEDT sits Queensland, rocking Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

The Northern Territory recognises Australian Central Standard Time (ACST), 90 minutes behind AEDT.

On the west coast, W.A. observes Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), a full three hours behind NSW, VIC, TAS and the ACT.

Got it? Nope? Expecting to constantly Google “current time in [x]” whenever you need to call someone interstate? Fair enough.

You’ve got until the first Sunday of April 2016 to figure all this out. That’s when the clocks are put back an hour and our nation inches closer together, timewise.

(It's also around that point when the entire country debates - once again - whether or not we should be playing with the very fabric of time.)

Want to learn a little more about DST? Here’s John Oliver’s explanation from earlier in the year, when America welcomed summer by similarly adjusting their clocks.
