Cry Happy Tears Over This Super Diverse 'Spring Lamb' Ad

Spring has sprung and Meat and Livestock Australia has wasted no time pushing lamb on prospective barbeque hosts.

But their latest ad is seeking to avoid the controversy of an earlier campaign (which offended vegans) by suggesting lamb is the meat “that doesn’t discriminate”.

As such, it features an entire roster of diverse Australians, all uniting over their shared love for an Aussie BBQ.

The cast includes Luke Jacobz, Arka Das, Samantha Harris, Jordan Raskopoulos, Cathy Freeman and Greg Inglis. A Hare Krishna vegetarian winds up in the mix, too.

It’s… it’s beautiful.

Meat and Livestock Australia’s marketing director, Andrew Howie, explained to Mumbrella the thinking behind the campaign.

“We have moved away from exclusion and we’ve really been very much about inclusion, so much so that there is actually a Hare Krishna in the ad this year,” he said.

“Really what we were going for was to try to showcase as much diversity as possible.”

Its debut comes after a Screen Australia diversity study found 82 per cent of fictional drama characters were Anglo-Celtic (despite them making up only 67 per cent of the Australian population).

“It’s quite sad that we have to run a campaign to say ‘hey Australia, you know what, we are really diverse and we should be accepting of everything and everyone’,” Howie added.

“There is an irony in having to run a campaign in Australia that is multicultural; to try to showcase the multicultural mix we have.”
