Coldplay Are Literally Harnessing Crowd Energy To Power Their Concerts

How would you feel about committing to an actual workout the next time you go to a live gig? It could be the way of the future if Coldplay has anything to do with it.

The pop superstars are attempting to make their latest world tour, 'Music of the Spheres', more eco-friendly. So, they've added kinetic dance floors and energy-storing stationary bikes to each concert so fans can literally power the show as they dance or spin.

Each kinetic dance floor can hold dozens of people and each bike (of which there are at least 15, depending on the venue size) can generate an average of 200 watts of energy, kept in batteries that then run certain parts of the show.

According to Associated Press, the band even hosts contests before the show to see which group of fans can generate the most power by putting on the bop "Jump Around" by House of Pain.

That's not all the rockers are up to either.

With a goal to cut their carbon emissions by 50 per cent and be as sustainable as possible, they've also used recycled steel for their tour stage, biodegradable confetti, compostable audience wristbands, solar panels and a backstage generator powered by vegetable oil.

They're also minimising their air travel, eliminating single-use plastics at venues and donating 10 per cent of the tour's net revenue to environmental organisations.

Making a world tour eco-friendly sounds like a mammoth task but Coldplay aren't the only big music act trying to reduce their climate footprint.

Shawn Mendes has also been working hard to reduce his environmental impact, using sustainable fabrics for merch, staying at hotels committed to net zero emissions and eliminating plastic.

Meanwhile, Associated Press reported Billie Eilish pledged to eliminate 35,000 single-use plastic water bottles from her tour, Olivia Rodrigo ensured all her "Sour" merch was sustainable and Harry Styles had battery recycling centres during his latest tour.
