How to Get a Christmas Casual Job this Year

How to Get a Christmas Casual Job this Year

And boy, do we have some opportunities for you

The semester is finished, school is nearing its final day for the year and freedom is approaching.

It’s the prime time of year for students to be looking for a casual job and for ways to earn some money.

And truthfully, it is one of the best times to be working a casual job or a Christmas casual job.

Why? Because there are heaps of shifts always available during the Christmas period.

If you’re looking for a way to earn some extra cash, this is your guide to getting a Christmas casual job.

Beef up your resume.

Maybe you’ve never written a resume, or maybe your resume has literal dust collecting.

Whatever the case, if you’re looking for a job, our advice is to always tweak and update your resume before applying to any new jobs. While there’s a world of info out there about resume writing, these are some of our best tips:

  • Use a professional email address: this is preferably an email address with your name in it. If your current email address is the one you made in Year 5 that’s something like harrylovesGTA5@outlook.com we’d suggest not using that one.
  • Put the most important information first: are you applying for casual jobs in hospitality and you've previously worked in hospitality? Put that info right up the top! This way, potential managers/hirers can see this and will automatically consider you.
  • Include your availability: for Christmas casual time, managers usually want to see when you’re available. If you make that clear right off the bat, they are more likely to shortlist you straight away.
  • Highlight your transferable skills (especially if you’ve never had a job): food and retail managers care about skills like customer service, communication, teamwork, reliability and time management. If you’ve never had a job back these up with examples from your personal life. Did you volunteer at your local sporting club? Did you help a small business with some day work? Were you part of a club at school? Include it in your resume.
  • Keep the design of your resume simple: don’t use bright green font or a cursive style which will have managers straining their eyes to see. Keep it simple and professional. Make sure there are clear sub-headings and solid spacing.

Some other general resume rules you might want to keep in mind of is to use action words like “served, assisted, organised, prepared or handled” and to keep your resume short and concise. A long resume doesn’t always mean a good one!

Where to find these jobs?

There are a number of different avenues for you to find Chrissy casual jobs.

Check job boards like SEEK, Indeed, Jora or even LinkedIn to see who’s hiring. Try searching phrases like ‘christmas casual’, ‘retail’ or ‘hospitality’ to find what you’re looking for.

You could also check your uni or school job board if they have one.

Some stores also have signs to say they are hiring so it’s always worth keeping a look out for a ‘hiring’ sign when you’re doing your shopping.

If you are going shopping already, just bring some paper copies of your resume with you anyway and drop them off at some stores you’re familiar with.

Even if they haven’t got a ‘help wanted’ sign up, they might be looking for casuals and if you hand in your resume, you’ll be who they think of first.
