Cheap Eats: John Montagu, NSW

If you're gonna name your sandwich place after the inventor of the sandwich, you're gonna have to deliver the goods.

Sandwiches are known to be quite boring and almost never worth the expensive prices that Sydney cafes charge.
However, this cafe (named after the man who invented the sandwich in the late 1700s) hits the spot with its delicious and absolutely filling gourmet concoctions.
They have a relatively small menu, but they specialise in their variety of sandwiches including a grilled fish sanga and one featuring 12-hour slow-cooked beef.
The prices can go up to $17, but the portions are huge!
This place also does simple toasties, as well as a classic bacon and eggs brekkie. Avoiding carbs? Salads are also an option, and I promise you they are scrumptious with generous servings. The quality of the food is superb and their bread is baked in-house.

Coffee lovers behold: their coffee is considered the best around the area. Not a coffee drinker? Don’t worry, they have jazzy juices and an interesting blend of soda drinks too.
The staff are super friendly and are always happy for a small chat. The cafe itself is quite small and great for catch-ups with a friend (especially if you need a break from the hectic city). They set up their vibes really well, with chilled soundtracks in the background, and an array of indie magazines to read from on the communal table.
Overall I think this place is great because it can be a stopover for coffee or a quick Sunday breakfast fix, as well as a place for gourmet lunches. For me, they have nailed great eats under $20 by transforming something very simple to a delicious dish anyone will love.
