Think You Want to Change Careers? DW, Here’s How to Weigh Up Your Options

There’s a whole world out there with a lot of options 🌏
The article is presented in partnership with MEGT.
Picture this: you know exactly what your future life should look like. You’ve done your time in school, got your qualifications and you’ve started working.
Only it isn’t what you imagined, and you’ve come to the realisation that *gulps* it might be time for a career change.
Don’t panic! We know, it’s easier said than done, but changing your mind mid-study or mid-career is more common than you think.
If you’re considering changing your career, here’s how you could weigh up your future options so you don’t have to feel so stressy.
Think about your existing interests.

Do you love working with your hands? Or maybe you’ve always loved the hospitality industry? The best way to begin figuring out your future is to consider all the things you love doing, and the talents you already have.
Connor worked in the construction industry for seven years and then decided he wanted a change.
Knowing he was interested in IT, he applied for one of MEGT’s IT positions with Unisys.
Not only did he come out with a Certificate IV in Information Technology but has since started a career in Cyber Security with the Royal Australian Air Force.
“Without the help, support, and opportunity that MEGT gave me, I wouldn’t be as happy as I am today,” he said.
“I’d recommend MEGT in a heartbeat to anyone who’s interested in a role or training with them.”
Consider different industries you might not have thought of.

You might be thinking “Why would I want to become an Automotive Electrician Apprentice?” But maybe that’s why it is the perfect job for you. If you can’t work out what you enjoy doing and you’re still feeling stuck, cast your net a little wider into a whole realm of possibilities.
If you’re stuck for inspo, the MEGT Jobs Board have loads of different traineeships, apprenticeships and jobs from so many different industries.
You can browse through the possibilities of working in business admin, to a mechanical plumbing apprenticeship, to a parks and gardens apprenticeship.
So even if you’re not sure what you’re working towards, you’ll at least have a starting point.
Think about working towards a qualification 🎓

Now hear us out, the last thing you might want to do when changing careers is studying. But…this could be a great way to gain some expertise and experience at the same time.
Apprenticeships and traineeships at MEGT offer you the chance to get some real-life experience in a future role. This way you’ll find out firsthand whether this is the right career path for you.
Working as a Mechanical Fitter Apprentice, for example, would allow you to help work on preventative maintenance, servicing and breakdown support for cranes and allow you to work towards a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical).
Or you can try working as a Business Admin Trainee where you’ll learn how to maintain a telephone switchboard and reception area, how to handle accounts payable and receive a Certificate III in Business after 12 months.
Understand what you might want out of a future career.

At the end of the day if you’re planning to change career directions, make sure you know what you want out of a future career.
Maybe you want to upskill and get a qualification. Or maybe you want to step straight into a job. Whatever the case, having that goal at the back of your mind will allow you to work towards something.
And the great thing is the MEGT jobs board have a heap of flexible options so you can choose to work, study or both 😇
