Tell Him He’s Dreaming: Bill Shorten Rebuffs Adam Bandt’s Suggestion Of Labor-Greens Coalition

Bill Shorten must be a fan of The Castle.

The Labor leader has responded to Greens MP Adam Bandt’s suggestion of a Labor-Greens Coalition (should Australia face another hung parliament) in the most ‘Darryl Kerrigan’ way possible.

On the ABC’s Q&A last night, Bandt was asked what the likelihood was of the Greens partnering up with Labor for a coalition (not unlike the Liberal Party’s coalition with the Nationals).

“If we do end up in a situation, like 2010, where no one wins [the election] and everyone has to negotiate, then I would like to see Greens working with Labor,” he said.

“I think the big question will be whether Labor wants to do it. I think we’re up for it.”

Well, Shorten has shared his thoughts on this Labor-Greens Voltron from Townsville, where he’s spending the second day of this eight-week election campaign.

“He's dreaming, Labor will fight this election to form its own Government," he said.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull – similarly on the hustings – is also not at all interested in joining a coalition with the Greens in the case of a hung parliament, as he emphatically announced this morning.

That said, he refused to rule out a preference deal with the Greens.
