Back to School With Saroo and Sue Brierley

The real-life subjects of Lion help us kick off the sixth season of Back to School With!

This post is presented in partnership with Bankwest.

Our webseries Back to School With invites Australia's most interesting and successful people to share stories from their school days. In each ep, they let us know how they landed their dream careers, as well as how they faced all those inevitable obstacles of teenagerdom along the way.

Over five seasons, we've interviewed Jimmy Barnes, Julie Bishop, Samantha Jade, Dr. Karl, Daniel Ricciardo, Ita Buttrose, Tom Ballard, Layne Beachley, John Marsden and many, many other fascinating peeps.

But a new year brings a new season... and even more incredible Aussie stories.

In the first episode of Season Six, we chat with Saroo Brierley and his mother Sue, the real-life subjects of the box office hit (and Best Picture nominee) Lion. Saroo told us all about his incredible journey, from Indian orphan to Tasmanian adoptee, and how he adjusted to life in Australian schools.

Saroo: "Going to school [in Australia] was one of those things that I really wanted to do, because in India, we couldn't afford to go to school."

Sue: "He was grateful for the opportunity of being able to go to school. When he was little he'd come home and say, 'I've been learning like magic.'"

Check out our chat.

Stay tuned: We'll be dropping new episodes each Tuesday. Join us as we venture back in time with another Aussie legend every week!
