Australians Agree: Australia Was Robbed At Eurovision

It was just our second outing at Eurovision, but locals are outraged that Dami Im had to settle for silver at the international song contest.

The consensus on social media following the announcement of Ukraine’s victory was a resounding “Wah.” (Widespread reports of “wahmbulances” being sent out across the nation thus far remain unconfirmed.)

With 511 points, Australia was 23 points shy of Ukraine’s night-winning tally of 534. Bookies fave Russia came third with 491.

It was the first time the Eurovision song contest showed off their new voting strategy, which combined jury votes with public televoting. For what it’s worth, Australia won the jury vote.

Im, who slayed with a second consecutive performance of “Sound of Silence”, was gracious after the announcement, treating herself to a celebratory “lemonade” (though, sadly, not of the Beyoncé variety).

But her fans back home were reeling.

Already, there are rumblings of politically-motivated voting at this year’s Eurovision (which, to be fair, pretty much happens every Eurovision), with 21 nations denying Russia points.

Ukraine’s representative, Jamala, called on Europe to support her song “1944” to demonstrate that they are “not indifferent to suffering” in Crimea.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.
