Turns Out Australia Has A Couple Volcanoes And They Both Erupted Just Last Week

Surprise!

Molten lava rumbling down the icy crest of a snow-tipped mountain. Not so ‘Strayan, right? Wrong!

Two individual volcanoes in Australian territory erupted just last week. However, before visions of Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton outrunning pyroclastic flow enter your mind, take note: they’re just lil’ ‘ol volcanoes, relatively speaking.

(Also, they’re technically in sub-Antarctica, located 4,100km south-west of Perth and 1,750 km north of Australia’s Antarctic base at Davis Station. But we still own them!)

According to ABC News, the Heard volcano – better known as Big Ben – enjoyed its third eruption in fifteen years late last week; an event captured on video by scientists making their first expedition to the mountain in nearly 30 years.

Poisonous gases and red-hot lava emanated from the volcano’s opening. Watch it go down below.

Over at the neighbouring McDonald islands, Big Ben’s sister volcano erupted too, passing only gas and surely inspiring several hilarious jokes among observers.
