Sydney Art Teacher Drops Sick Bars to Educate Her Students on the Point of Art

A high school art teacher in Sydney has tried a different approach toward schooling the youths on art.

The Year 11 visual arts teacher, Mariah Calman, has opted for a more musical teaching style, trading blackboard notes for solid bars of rapping gold (as gold as rapping art syllabus can be).

Calman's teaching method was noticed after award-winning Australia artist Ben Quilty shared a video of her rapping art lessons on Facebook.

ABC's 7.30 spoke to Calman to see what lead her to test out these unorthodox methods of teaching.

"Teaching—so little of it comes down to curriculum. A lot of it is about how to engage students, how to differentiate and focus on student wellbeing as well," Calman explained to 7.30. "This job is the reason why and how I can and do get out of bed and I love it so much."

Some of her students told 7.30 that Ms Calman is "fearless."

"I've got to say one of the best classes I've ever had is an art class. Some days even if I don't have art it's why I come to school," one of her students explained.

Keep it up, you've been certified.
