Apple Just Sold Its Billionth iPhone

You know what’s cooler than a million iPhones?
Today, Apple announced the sale of its billionth iPhone; a milestone made even more impressive by the fact that they’ve sold 500 million of those since March of 2014.
The iPhone initially went on sale on June 29, 2007. The billionth iPhone was officially sold last week. (We’re assuming this amounts to 750 million broken screens, too.)
CEO Tim Cook spoke to employees today in Cupertino, saying, “We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference.”
“Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day."
And yet… Apple is still not the runaway leader of the smartphone industry. Andreessen Horowitz analyst Benedict Evans this week hypothesised that Apple has about 630 million “active” iPhones out in the wild, compared with 1.3 - 1.4 billion active Androids.
Apple will seek to reclaim the lead when it drops their next iPhone in September. (Sorry. We really shouldn’t say drop and iPhone in the same sentence, should we?)
