2K Games Drops "WWE 2K22" Trailer During "Wrestlemania 37"

2K Games gave wrestling fans their first look at the new WWE 2K22 game with a 30 second trailer airing during night one of WrestleMania 37.

Sure, it’s not much but let’s give in to our excitement and look at everything we know so far.

Long-time WWE veteran Rey Mysterio is the main feature in the new trailer, with the sneak preview opening with the Mexican wrestler putting on his famous mask in a dark room before cutting to some awesome gameplay footage of him hitting his 619 finisher on Cesaro.

Though it’s early gameplay footage, the graphics for the new game make the nearly two year hiatus worth it. The detail on the skin, tattoos, clothing textures, eyes, facial and body hair all look next level.

The bottom of the video says, “Gameplay footage captured from a work-in-progress build,” so we might need to take the trailer with a pinch of salt but with WWE fans having little to cheer about over the last year, it’s nice to get this gift from 2K Games.

Despite a great looking trailer, pressure is mounting on 2K Games, with the long-running wrestling simulator taking a hiatus in developing a 2021 version of the game after the terrible reviews for the 2K20 release.

Seriously, if you haven’t played it yet, don’t bother. Reviews were scathing, the game was full of bugs and even the most devout WWE superfan would have trouble saying a good thing about it.

In its place the developers released WWE 2K Battlegrounds, an arcade-style fighting game with the WWE wrestlers appearing as more outlandish cartoon versions of themselves. It was better than WWE 2K20, but not by much.

I bought WWE 2k20 on a Playstation Store fire sale for $20 and I feel like that was about the right price. Excited for 2k22. No direction but up.

It looks like 2K Games have taken a step back since then and reevaluated their commitment to the wrestling series by taking the year to think about it all.

Thankfully, they are returning to a full-blown wrestling sim with WWE 2K22. As of yet there is no official release date but expect the game to launch towards the end of this year. We'll keep you updated when 2K Games makes an official announcement.

Elsewhere in wrestling news, WrestleMania 37 night two is almost over. Night one saw Bobby Lashley retain the WWE title against drew McIntyre while Bianca Belair dethroned Sasha Banks to win the Smackdown Women’s championship in the main event.
