You’ve Already Met Claire, the ‘Typical Australian’; Now Meet Andrew, the ‘Typical Politician’

Buzzfeed News has released their own findings from 2016's census data, regarding the demographics of Australian Federal Parliament.

According to Buzzfeed, the average politician is an Andrew. No, literally. There are more Andrews in Federal Parliament than Liberal Party women with ministerial duties (well, if you exclude assistant ministers).

The average politician is male (in case that wasn’t obvious), 51 years of age, Anglo-Saxon, owns two homes and has a degree in Law.

They also found that there were 151 men and 73 women in parliament, showing that the scales haven't quite yet tipped in favour of equal representation.

Senator Derryn Hinch claims the title for most senior pollie, at 73, while Liberal senator James Paterson was the youngest, at 29.

In terms of owning properties, while the average number was only two, many politicians unsurprisingly exceeded that number by a considerable amount.

Queensland Senator Barry O'Sullivan owns more than 30 properties; Nationals MP David Gillespie owns 18, while Liberal Party MPs Karen Andrews and Ian Goodenough both own 10 places.

So, there you have it. Australian Parliament demographics haven't really changed much since the beginning of time.
