Our National Nightmare Is Over: Your Tweets Are Now A Little Bit Longer (Kinda)

Twitter is making good on their promise to extend your Tweet-length… kinda.
In a new post to their official blog, Senior Product Manager Todd Sherman confirmed that Tweets will no longer let @names and media attachments “use up” your precious 140 characters.
Earlier this month, it was rumoured that the social media service would no longer count photos and links in your character count.
They were half right.
Sherman confirmed that “photos GIFS, videos, polls, or Quote Tweets…. will no longer count as characters within your Tweet.”
However, links will still count. Curses!
Twitter is hoping to make up for that oversight by excluding @names from your character count, and doing away with the whole “.@name” thing when you want everyone to see a conversation you’ve started.
“New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers,” Sherman said. Mercifully, it’s only “new Tweets” – meaning, you won’t suddenly see conversations between those you follow and their random friends.
The new changes being rolled out will also make it easier to “retweet and quote yourself”, if you “feel like a really good [Tweet] went unnoticed.”
Oooh boy.
