Your First Day At Work

Your First Day At Work
Congratulations! You've landed a job and you're ready to work and make some cold hard cash. Hurrah! But what can you expect from your first day at work, and are there any tips that could help everything go smoothly?

1. Be on time
Easy enough to follow, right? Find out what time you need to show up for work and be ON TIME. Heck, be EARLY even. First impressions speak volumes, so be punctual and dress appropriately for the role. If work supplies a uniform, make sure it's clean and pressed.

2. The paperwork
If you haven't already done so prior to your first day, then you should expect to be given a bunch of forms to fill. This might include forms from Human Resources requiring you to provide personal information such as name, date of birth, residential address, next-of-kin's particulars (in case of emergency) and contact number. You will probably also be asked to provide bank account details, so that your pay can go directly into your account. Tax is payable on any money you earn, so you'll also get asked for your Tax File Number, which you can obtain from the Australian Tax Office. Finally, your employer will also give you forms to sign up for a Superannuation account, which is kinda like a forced saving towards your retirement, required by law. Know that you can nominate a superannuation account of your choice, though many first-time workers are quite happy to have their employee choose a Superannuation company for them.

3. Meal and rest breaks
Be aware of your rights at work and ask about your meal and break times. It is a breach of Occupational Health and Safety rules for anyone to work for an extended period of time without a break.

4. Find out who's who in the zoo
It's good to be introduced to everyone at work on your first day. Ask them their names and what they do. Make notes (mental or otherwise) so you know who to turn to if you have questions. Most importantly, get to know your immediate manager as they should be your first port of call if you run into any issues.

5. Understand your role and set clear expectations
Make sure you understand what is required of you, and set clear goals with your manager for any projects or tasks which you have been given. Listen carefully and never be afraid to ask questions. It's far less costly than trying to rectify mistakes.

6. Have fun!
As they say, if you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life. Many of us make lifelong friends in the work environment, so take the opportunity to be social and have fun doing what you love.

At the end of the first day, check in with your manager and ask for feedback. It would be nice to know that things have gone well, but remember that there's lots to learn in the coming weeks, months and even years, so be kind to yourself and just enjoy the journey to financial independence!
