Is the New “Wuthering Heights” Movie the Matcha Dubai Chocolate Labubu of Film?

The latest flick that has everyone on the internet in a frenzy
The poster and trailer for the new Wuthering Heights film adaption dropped last week and people had a lot to say about it.
The original book with the same name, written by author Emily Bronte follows the dark, destructive, and obsessive love between Heathcliff and Catherine, which leads to a cycle of hatred and vengeance impacting two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families on the Yorkshire moors.
The story explores themes of love, hate, revenge, social class, nature, and the supernatural, often described as a gothic romance that contrasts the passionate intensity of the wild moors with the superficiality of high society.
What’s the film about?

The description for the movie adaption, directed by Emerald Fenell is “Tragedy strikes when Heathcliff falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw, a woman from a wealthy family in 18th-century England.”
Emerald Fennell is known for her two films – Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. The film has a star-studded cast with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Why are people so against the movie?

The film has already been met with a lot of controversy as people are saying the film looks so far nothing like the original text and that it’s romanticising the horrors and abuse in the book.
However, there are also some people saying that the quotation marks around the title, the stark difference in costumes shown in the trailer and the fact that it’s being directed by Emerald Fennell may mean the film won’t be like people expect.
Plus, with an announcement that Charli XCX will be producing a song for the soundtrack and with her iconic song "everything is romantic" featured on the trailer, it’s no surprise people have been quick to label it the microtrend of film.
It's also being released on Valentine's Day next year with many people also saying this specific release date and the song choice for the trailer feels like it's shining a misconstrued light on what the book is really about. Many users online have been quick to comment that this feels like a BookTok version that is basically relying on just being trendy.
What are everyone’s reactions and theories?

While some people are hopeful this version will be a fantasised version of the book, some people are saying that the casting of Jacob Elordi was a bad choice.
Whether this movie will be considered TikTok-ified or not will be up to audiences when the film releases next year. Needless to say, this film has been getting a lot of attention over the past few months and it will be interesting to see how this new movie adapts the book 👀
