Would Ron Swanson Like Australia? Will "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" Head Down Under? We Have Answers

The Good Place showrunner Michael Schur gave us the scoop.

Student Edge recently got to chat with The Good Place creator Michael Schur, asking him the hard questions about the show’s depiction of Australia, like, where did Chidi even get Peeps from?

We couldn’t pass up this chance to also ask Schur about his two other brilliant sitcoms: Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Specifically: Could their casts come to Australia too?

Firstly, would the team at Brooklyn Nine-Nine ever leave their precinct behind to go on a team-building exercise Down Under?

"Probably not, but I’ll never say never to anything like that," Schur says.

"It would be hard to imagine how a group of police officers from a borough in New York would ever find their way to Australia," he laughs, adding, "I can’t imagine that happening; it’s very unlikely."

Okay, fine, we’ll pass that along to Scott Morrison. But what about Parks and Recreation’s iconic Ron Swanson? Would he like it here, or would he resent spending time in one of the Queen’s colonies?

"Well, let me think about this," Schur generously offers.

"My initial comment would be that he hates every place except for where he’s from [Pawnee, Indiana]. He might like Australia because it’s sort of remote and there’s vast swaths of Australia that are uninhabited and they’re very rugged; I think that aspect of it he would like. He would hate it until he got there. And if he got to the right place, if he went into the outback and just found some kind of farm or something where he could just hang out and be undisturbed by anyone, he would enjoy that.

"But he’s always gonna be suspicious of anyplace that isn’t America."

New episodes of The Good Place S3 debut on Netflix in Australia every Friday. The first five seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are also on Netflix, with Season 6 debuting on SBS Viceland in early 2019.

Parks and Recreation is, as of this writing, no longer being produced, but we’re working on some black magic incantations to bring it back from the grave.
