World's Biggest SD Card Holds More Than Your Laptop (Probably)

World: Meet SanDisk's biggest SD card ever.

The heavyweight champion of all SD cards, the Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I, holds a gigantic one terabyte of memory.

Hold your horses though - It's only a prototype at the moment. We still don't have a confirmed release date or price.

Dinesh Bahal, the Vice President of SanDisk, spoke about the product at tech event Photokina. "Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB," he said.

There have been increasing demands for memory-heavy formats which house capabilities of storing extremely high definition video footage, 360-degree video and virtual reality. Don't worry, I forgot that those things existed too. Here I was thinking: Uh, how many Word Documents would fill out an entire terabyte of storage space?

mindblown

The gargantuan 1TB SD is expected to be quite pricey (understandably). Currently, SanDisk's 512GB SD weighs in at $US799, while the smaller 64GB is about $US339. I'm no maths genius, but judging from those comparisons, we can expect it to be priced upwards of $US1000.

At such a large capacity, read and write speeds may be comparatively slow. There's also the danger of having too much space, to the point where you never switch or back-up cards. This would be all fine and dandy - unless your 1TB card corrupts and everything vanishes.

If you lose SD cards the way I tend to lose Chapsticks, then this product might not be for you.
