Who Is Taylor Swift’s “Dorothea” About? Let’s Investigate

Is it about Selena Gomez or Gigi Hadid's baby's name?

If you spent your entire weekend listening to Taylor Swift's ninth studio album evermore on repeat and annoying everyone in your household, same tbh.

Last week, Taylor shocked the internet when she dropped her second surprise album of 2020. It was written and designed as a sister record to the majestic folklore and contains 15 new tracks and two deluxe-edition tracks.

Unsurprisingly, the record is already doing super well on music charts around the globe. As of writing this article, it's sitting in the top spot on the iTunes Top 200 Albums chart, and the lead single "willow" is No.2 on the iTunes Top 40 Australian Alternative Songs chart.

It's certainly an impressive achievement. However, the thing that we're all most excited about: We have a whole bunch of new tunes to ruthlessly dissect.

Swifties are particularly intrigued by the album's eighth track, "dorothea". Some fans believe the song is definitely about Tay's close friend Selena Gomez, while others are convinced it's a name reveal for Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik's baby daughter.

It's totally about Selena, but we're all about fairness here. So, let's dig a little deeper.

We'll kick things off with the Selena theory. As people have been quick to point out, Selena's favourite film is The Wizard of Oz. Considering the main character in the flick is named Dorothy (Judy Garland), it's completely logical that stans would make the connection.

Except, the easter eggs don't stop there. In "dorothea" Taylor sings, "When we were younger down in the park."

Well, here is cold hard evidence of Taylor and Selena hanging out at—you guessed it—the park.

Furthermore, Taylor reflects, "A tiny screen's the only place I see you now/ And I got nothing but well-wishes for ya." Well, it turns out that Tay and Selena caught up via Facetime on Selena's cooking show back in August.

Still need further convincing? Post-chorus, Taylor sings, "You're a queen sellin' dreams, sellin' makeup and magazines." What has Selena recently launched? Her beauty line Rare Beauty! Plus, she's also appeared on the cover of numerous magazines throughout her time in the spotlight.

Between other references to "making a lark of misery" and having "shiny friends", there's simply no way that "dorothea" isn't about Selena. Of course, Taylor hasn't confirmed the theory yet.

On the other hand, others are sure that "dorothea" actually reveals the name of Gigi and Zayn's baby daughter. While we've seen a few cute pics of the bub on social media, her name hasn't been announced yet.

There's definitely some meat to this theory as well. The 14th track on folklore, "betty", introduces characters James and Inez, which just so happen to be the names of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's eldest children. So, fans wondered whether "betty" was the name of Blake and Ryan's third daughter, who was born in late 2019.

Well, Swifties were right. As reported by Elle, Blake and Ryan did reportedly let the singer reveal the name on folklore.

With this in mind, it's pretty reasonable to assume that Tay is revealing the name of Gigi and Zayn's baby on "dorothea".

Plus, one fan made this wild connection to "august" on folklore to back up the theory.

But here's the thing: What if "dorothea" is about both Selena and Gigi and Zayn's baby's name?

Now, that would be mind-blowing. I guess we'll be trying to figure it out forevermore.
