White Supremacist Mass Shooter Dylann Roof Sentenced To Death

Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death by a jury in South Carolina for killing nine black church members at a bible study meeting in 2015.

Roof has been found guilty of 33 federal charges, including hate crimes resulting in death.

He had waited for members of a Bible study group to close their eyes in prayer before opening fire; the shooting shocked the United States, and the rest of the world.

The avowed white supremacist had not expressed any shame or remorse for his actions. He told jurors the massacre was something he had to do, and did not ask for his life to be spared.

The jurors had deliberated for less than three hours, during which Roof stared straight ahead as the judge read through the final verdict.

It's understood the accused had planned the attack over the course of months, staking out the church and writing a racist manifesto. It’s a relatively rare occurrence for federal juries to impose the death penalty, but prosecutors firmly believe Roof “deserves” it.

Roof told FBI agents he hoped to bring back segregation, and perhaps start a race war through his brutal slaying.

The accused still faces a trial on murder charges in state court; prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for those charges too.
