Where to See Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson’s Netflix Movie "Marriage Story" in Australian Cinemas

We hope you’re fully hydrated because your eyes are about to vomit tears.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for its hotly anticipated Oscar favourite Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as two parents heading towards divorce.

Both Driver and Johansson have been getting buzz for their leading performances, as have co-stars Laura Dern and Alan Alda (playing their attorneys). Vulture even reckons this could become the rare film to score four acting nominations across all categories at the next Academy Awards.

See why below.

The semi-autobiographical flick, directed by Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, The Meyerowitz Stories), doesn’t arrive on the streaming service until 6 December. However, if you can’t wait until then, and would much rather prefer to violently sob in a public place, you’ll be glad to know it’s getting a limited run in cinemas, just like Netflix’s other big Oscar contender, The Irishman.

Marriage Story hits select US cinemas on 6 November, and arrives in a handful of Aussie theatres on 14 November. It’ll also get a brief run in New Zealand cinemas from 29 November.

Participating cinemas include Classic Cinema, Belgrave Cameo and Lido Cinema in Melbourne; Dendy Opera Quays, Dendy Newtown, Hayden Orpheum and The Ritz in Sydney; Dendy Cooparoo and Dendy Portside in Brisbane; The Backlot in Perth; and Dendy Canberra in Canberra. (You'll notice that the major chains are staying away, likely because they're not fans of the shortened window between cinema release and home availability. Read more about that burbling feud here.)

As we said about The Irishman, cinemas probably won’t keep playing Marriage Story once it’s available to stream on Netflix, so you’ll want to move quickly if you insist on the theatrical experience. It’s also becoming a rarer and rarer opportunity for Baumbach’s features, seeing how his last effort, The Meyerowitz Stories, debuted on Netflix with no Australian theatrical release at all.
