Finished School? Here’s What You Could Do During Your Gap Year

Taking a gap year? Here are some ideas on what to do during it.

Whether you’re feeling uncertain, excited (or a mix of both) about finishing school it can feel like it is the beginning of the rest of your life.

While some people want to dive into more study immediately, taking a gap year can be a great time for you to grow personally and professionally.

But how do you make the most of it? What should you do with your time off? Here’s a guide to help you think through your options and turn your gap year into a meaningful adventure.

Travel.

One of the most popular gap year options is to travel.

Immersing yourself in new cultures, languages, and environments can be eye-opening, and it offers the kind of learning that a classroom doesn’t.

Whether it’s backpacking through Europe, skiing in Japan, taking it easy in Bali, or even your own van life adventure, travel is a great way to reset and clear your mind.

You also don’t have to spend an entire year traveling. You can work for some of it to save up some money and then spend another portion exploring.

Volunteer.

Not only does volunteering allow you to give back to communities in need, but it also helps you develop skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork.

Many students spend part of their gap year volunteering as camp leaders in the US.

Other opportunities include teaching or working abroad.

These roles are a great way to gain new skills, meet new people and see the world.

Work Experience.

A gap year can be the perfect time to get some work experience which can set you up for your future.

Whether this means internships, freelancing or volunteering, you’ll be able to develop new skills and gain hands-on experience in a field you may be interested in.

Plus, it will look good on your resume!

Part-Time or Full-Time Work.

A gap year can be a great time to secure a part-time or full-time job.

Working a job during your gap year not only allows you to learn new skills, but also earn money at the same time. It’s a great way to gain some life experience before you begin studying in the future.

You could work in retail, hospitality, tech or another industry.

And who knows, you could end up being offered a permanent role later on!

Take time for personal growth and reflection.

A gap year gives you time to focus on yourself.

Use the time to dive deeper into activities you enjoy or try new things.

Whether it’s painting, playing a musical instrument, or writing, exploring creative outlets can be a fulfilling way to spend your time.

Focus on improving your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing through meditation, journalling and exercise.

Taking time for yourself can help build confidence, recharge and gain clarity on your next steps.

Whether you choose to travel, volunteer, work, or focus on personal growth, the experiences you have during your gap year can shape your future in ways you can’t yet imagine.
