What Is the ‘Meta Selfie’? And How to Take One for Your Insta

This trend is taking selfies to a whole new level.

If you’ve been on Instagram for a hot minute, you’d be familiar with the trends of ‘photo dumps’, 'handless selfies', candids, ‘finstas’ and trolls. Is it just me, or are posts getting more and more blurry and chaotic?

Welp, things just got even more interesting. Introducing: the ‘Meta Selfie’, termed by the writers over at Refinery29. It’s pretty much a selfie within a selfie—think Inception, but instead of super cool dream worlds overlayed on top of each other, it’s literally just your face inside a mirror or a camera screen.

So, how is it done?

This took some head-scratching. There are two main ways you can achieve this ultra-Y2K vibe.

To look super sleek without any second-hand assistance, all you need is your phone and a mirror. Open up your camera and direct your screen towards the mirror so that the camera interface is reflected in it. Strike your pose and take a screenshot.

If you have a willing friend with a phone, or if you own two phones, open the camera on both. Then literally just take a photo of…yourself taking a photo? Yeah, I’m still processing all this.

Ah, remember 2014 when we were all over VSCO filters and trying to look as professional as possible? I’m lowkey a little glad that I can get away with tackiness now. With COVID-19 taking over the world at the moment, there’s not too much else we can take photos of to keep our feeds looking fire.

This all begs the question: what will come next? Are posts of screenshots of Instagram posts gonna be the next big thing? How much more meta will we get?
