What is ‘Couch Guy’ and Why is It All Over My TikTok ‘For You Page’?

The internet has imploded over this one dude.

If you’re a fan of a good ol’ TikTok trend, you’ve probably recently come across a series of videos of a girlfriend surprising her long-distance boyfriend that look eerily similar.

I present to you: ‘Couch Guy’, TikTok’s latest obsession.

In case you have no idea what the heck couch guy is and where this weird trend has come from, here’s a breakdown.

Who is Couch Guy?

Basically, about a week ago, a girl posted a cute video of herself surprise visiting her long-distance boyfriend at college.

In the short clip, the girl is seen walking into what looks like her partner's apartment/dorm room only to find him sat on a couch with three other girls (looking suss) and surrounded by his mates, clearly eating up the entire situation.

The boyfriend was quickly dubbed Couch Guy due to his position on the couch next to three girls and is being low-key roasted online for his underwhelming ‘red-flag’ reaction to his girlfriend’s surprise visit.

Essentially, loads of viewers think he looks oddly annoyed by her arrival.

Some TikTok users are seeing this as the wholesome video that it was intended to be, but the rest of the internet has just about lost its mind trying to figure out if Couch Guy is actually a cheater.

Check out the video for yourself.

Why is the internet so concerned?

For some reason, the internet has a chokehold on this video and viewers are bending over backwards to try and figure out whether or not this guy is being unfaithful to his gf.

It’s dividing TikTok into two and has already amassed over 57.4M views on TikTok (insane).

By watching the one-minute clip, it can be kind of hard to discern whether or not Couch Guy is interested, faithful or otherwise excited—I mean, it’s just a one-minute clip.

But since the release of the video, many creators have come out of their internet hidey-holes to share conspiracy theories about Couch Guy, pose questions about the hoodie one of the couch girls are wearing, investigate the sneaky phone grab from Couch Guy, and even suss out the reaction from Couch Guy’s friends.

@ash.0311 I’m not ashamed for how many times I watched this 😂 lookout sis #fypシ #foryou #couchguy #surprisingmybf #TakeTheDayOffChallenge #greenscreen

On top of the viral sleuthing, the girlfriend, Lauren, quickly clapped back at responses in defence of her and Couch Guy’s relationship.

“Breaks my heart that people can watch a special moment and bring so much negativity. Please think before you assume anything about my relationship,” she said in another viral video.

As the internet goes, this only added fuel to the fire and Lauren was soon accused of being in denial, which means the content quickly drifted into an unnecessarily nasty side.

From the looks of things, the internet’s obsession with their relationship is just a reaction to a whole lotta boredom. Sometimes, we cling to things that seem dramatic, and who doesn’t love a bit of relationship drama?

In reality, if this couple were having relationship issues behind closed doors, they would’ve likely discussed it privately and then either sorted it out or broken up without any of us knowing, but alas, the internet had to stick its big nose into it.

What’s with the recreations?

Aside from the internet detectives, there are plenty of other TikTok users who have turned the video into a viral joke trend.

Yes, that’s right, people are recreating the moment where Lauren and Couch Guy are reunited for the lols, often in a highly exaggerated and obvious way.

@gabriellekraus That’s some Robbie behavior right there… #couchguy ♬ still falling for you - audiobear

On one note, they’re funny as heck, and on the other, I low-key feel bad for Lauren. It’s gotta be rough seeing so many videos mocking your relo.

While the whole situation seems kinda mean, it also looks like Lauren is riding the wave of publicity for what it is.

She’s even gone as far as creating Couch Guy merch, and honestly, go off queen.

Although this video is dominating TikTok this week, I can only imagine that it’s going to be some other weird or wacky trend come Saturday arvo, so hold on to your hats for the next one.
