We've Broken Down All the Pros and Cons of Headphones vs. Earbuds

Get the best quality audio.

This post is presented in partnership with Sennheiser.

Whether you're looking to listen to music on your commute or a podcast as you go to sleep, having the right kind of audio gear can make or break your experience.

So, if you’re thinking about which audio gear to invest in, we’re here to break down all the differences between wired, wireless, big or small headphones and earbuds with Sennheiser so that you can decide what best meets your needs.

Pros of headphones.

With a pair of headphones, you get the benefit of noise reduction/cancellation of most noise that you don’t wanna hear.

What this means is that when you’re listening to music or a movie with your headphones, they contain technology that listens out for atmospheric sounds like air, engines or conversation and then cancels these noises out, so you have a crisp and clear listening experience.

Because headphones come with better noise cancellation technology, they also usually have a superior sound quality. This is also because headphones are bigger and have more room to include quality equipment. Plus, with Sennheiser, you know the sound is going to be legendary.

This next pro may be somewhat debatable, but generally, most people find that headphones are a lot more comfortable for the ears than earbuds. Not only do they not sit directly inside your ear, but they also come with some pretty thick cushioning that rest around or on your ears softly.

Most headphones nowadays are also fairly versatile. For example, you can still buy wired versions, but a lot also come wireless for your convenience. In most cases, you can also fold a pair of headphones up, so they’re not completely taking over your bag.

Cons of headphones.

While headphones have a ton of benefits that can make you want to rush out and buy a pair ASAP, they also have the downside of noise leakage.

Although most headphones have decent padding, they don’t completely seal your ear in. If we’re being honest, not everyone’s ears or head are the same shape or size either. So, some sound may end up leaking out (and disturbing anyone that may be around you).

This is probably fine if you’re just listening at home, but if you’re studying in class or on public transport, it’s probs going to bug a few people without you realising.

Secondly, while most headphones can fold up, they are still kinda bulky. Basically, it's a one-way ticket to making your bag even heavier.

If you’re really in the market for headphones but aren’t a fan of anything too heavy, Sennheiser have some great options that are ultra-lightweight, so maybe check out their range if this is a con you want to avoid.

Also, while you can get wireless headphones, they tend to be a little bit pricier than wired headphones. If you’re looking for studio professional headphones instead of everyday ones, it’s a lot harder to find a wireless option.

Pros of earbuds.

Okay, let’s move on to the benefits of earbuds.

The most obvious benefit of earphones and earbuds is their portability. They’re often super small, come in a convenient carry and changing case, and can fit into almost any pocket or bag.

Compared to headphones, earbuds do a much better job at keeping the sound you want in your ears, because the sound is being directed straight into your ear canal.

Just like headphones, earbuds can also offer top-notch sound quality, but it definitely depends on what brand you pick up. For some top-quality sound, you may wanna check out Sennheiser, ‘cos they live and breathe quality audio.

Wireless-ness is kind of implied with earbuds, so you’ve got the convenience of not having to deal with that awful knotted cable every time you want to listen to some tunes.

Cons of earbuds.

On the downside, noise reduction or cancellation won’t be as solid, so if you’re in a particularly noisy place you’re going to have to up the volume on your device to clearly hear what you’re listening to.

Additionally, ‘cos the earbud goes directly into your ear, some people might argue that it’s a more uncomfortable way to listen to music. This gets particularly bothersome if you want to lay on your side and listen (no one wants an earbud digging into their ear).

Although the small size of earbuds makes them a more convenient option, it also means that they’re at a much higher risk of getting lost (or ending up in your dog’s belly if you’re not careful).

While earbuds are wireless, earphones usually still come with a cable—especially professional grade versions. That means you are still going to need to put up with a pesky cable to get the quality you’re looking for.

So, there you have it. While both earbuds and headphones have their unique pros and cons, they both do an excellent job at giving you the sound you want on the go.

Regardless of what you’re going to use headphones or earphones for, you will defs find an option that’s right for you with Sennheiser.

Study and listen, workout and listen, or immerse yourself in sound on your commute by picking up a pair of Sennheiser headphones or earbuds from their website.
