Very Good Dog Elected To Third Term As Mayor In Small American Town

He’s such a good boy mayor.

For a moment, forget any frustrations you may have with Brexit, the American presidential race or the plebiscite.

In this time of global uncertainty and electoral chaos, it’s important to remember that, mostly, democracy still works.

And nowhere is that more apparent than Cormorant, Minnesota, a township with an approximate population of 1,039 and precisely one dog mayor.

Last month, Duke – a nine-year-old Great Pyrenees – was elected to his third term as mayor in the small West Minnesota town.

As America’s ABC notes, he’s the only dog to have ever been elected mayor in the States… so far.

Duke’s owner, David Rick, said the mayor was, initially, unintentionally elected as part of a gag.

“It was a write in vote. You pay a dollar and you can vote," he explained.

It took just twelve votes to secure Duke the gig.

By the end of his second term, however, he had scared away competition and effectively ran unopposed, winning in a landslide. (His girlfriend, Lassie, did manage one vote in her favour.)

Duke’s duties are pretty limited, given the ceremonial nature of the role. But at least his election gave us this perfect Tweet:
