"Uncharted" Movie Photo Shows a Moustache-Less Sully and Fans Aren't Happy

Sully's mo is no mo'.
Fans of the Uncharted video game series have woken up this morning to some shocking news as an on-set pic from the upcoming film adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg has caused outrage.
For those unfamiliar with the Uncharted series, Nathan Drake's (Holland) mentor Victor 'Sully' Sullivan (Wahlberg) plays a key role throughout all four games. He shows love to the orphaned Drake, provides great humour in tense situations, and can be a badass when he needs too. Basically for a generation of gamers, he was our cool digital uncle. Oh, and he had a killer moustache that we all wanted.
So why is there controversy? Simple: Sully doesn’t have a moustache. In a photo released by The New York Times, Wahlberg and Holland are shown in a scene exploring what appears to be some sort of church. Holland has the Nathan Drake attire down to a tee, but Wahlberg's version of Sully is shockingly hairless below the nose. No stubble in sight.
For that, I cannot forgive.
Gamers have spent years getting to know and love the characters of Nathan Drake and Sully in the game series, so it’s understandable that the photo has led to people online questioning why the characters don’t resemble their video game counterparts.
Now, it should be noted that the film is a prequel to the video game series and therefore Sony Pictures do have the creative freedom to do what they want, but avid players of the game will recall that in Uncharted 3, players got to see Sully in a flashback, complete with his magnificent moustache.
Here are just some of the internet’s best reactions to the photo.

Despite all this outrage—which I personally think is completely justified—I’m almost certain that Sony is trolling fans everywhere with this one. The game series has been a big financial hit for Sony, and I can’t see why they would put fans offside with something as insignificant iconic as Sully’s moustache.
Sony does seem to be aware of the risk though with PlayStation Production’s head Asad Qizilbash admitting to the New York Times that if they don’t get it right, it could damage the series.
“We have three objectives. Grow audience size for games. Bring product to Sony Pictures. Showcase collaboration,” Qizilbash said.
“It’s risky. But I think we can do it.”
With Sony having sunk $US120 million into the film, surely there was enough in the budget to get a fake mo for Wahlberg? Could’ve had him grow one for free and save the studio some money even.
Uncharted starring Holland and Wahlberg will hit Australian cinemas on 17 February 2022.
