Two-Thirds of Year 9 Students in NSW Are Going to Have to Re-Sit the NAPLAN to Get Their HSC

Due to the introduction of a minimum standard for NAPLAN results, a whole bunch of Year 9 students in NSW will have to re-do the test in order to get their HSC.
The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) is reporting that nearly 70 per cent of NSW students who sat the Year 9 NAPLAN this year failed to meet the minimum standard of Band 8, which was introduced in May this year.
The minimum standards dictate that in order for a student to qualify for their HSC, they need to achieve a minimum of Band 8 in all three areas: numeracy, reading and writing.
If students would like to gain their HSC, they will need to do an online test in the area they did not meet the minimum standard for and achieve the required mark. These tests can be undertaken a maximum of two times per year.

According to the SMH, only 32 per cent of students achieved this standard.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told SMH that this was still a great achievement due to an improvement on the previous year's results.
"The results for Year 9 students are particularly outstanding as they mean more students than expected have now pre-qualified to meet the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy for the HSC," Berejiklian told SMH.
Students who do not qualify for the HSC and go on to Year 12 will receive a Record of School Achievement and may still be eligible for an ATAR.
