TikTok of the Week: This Girl Reckons Some People Can Smell Ants and I’m Shook

What on earth would ants even smell like?

Welcome to our new series TikTok of the Week, where we highlight our favourite original TikTok from the past seven days (and give out a few honourable mentions as well).

We'll break our picks down for you, because why not? The internet is a weird and wonderful place!

So, without further ado, here are the videos that grabbed our attention the most this week.

This week's winner is...

On Wednesday, TikTok user @peepeepoopooemily (lol let’s just go with Emily), posted a video to her account with a caption that shocked the internet.

"Apparently some people can't smell dead ants... at all," the caption read.

But here's my question: Can people really smell dead ants?

Well, apparently some people can smell ants, and not just the dead variety, but ants in general.

Yeah, this is just like the coriander/soap debate all over again.

TikTok user, Emily, followed up with a video the next day expressing how surprised she was that the majority of viewers in her comments couldn’t actually smell ants, and that she fell into a minority of people who can detect the odour that ants give off.

"Apparently the majority of people can’t smell ants," she said.

"I thought they were the weird ones and everyone’s looking at me like, what?".

So, if you’re a non-ant smeller and you’re thinking this all sounds a bit strange, Emily goes on to explain that she isn’t just going around putting her face right up to ants to sniff them. No—she can just smell them from a distance because apparently the odour is that strong.

Fortunately, some people in the comments were just as surprised as me.

"I feel like you’re pranking us," said @ankiellerpytte.

On the other hand, some users defended Emily’s claims.

"I thought you were joking but I googled it and it is very much a thing," said @madz_thedadz.

We put the question to the rest of the Student Edge team, and our Digital Producer & Designer Intan confirmed that ants indeed do have a smell.

"I was walking around my school minding my own business during recess and I smelt something," she says.

"I asked one of the teachers on duty if she could smell it, and then she pointed out that there was a bull ant on my shoulder."

The TikTok has also sparked a number of responses and duets, but it appears that Emily truly isn’t pranking us.

Our honourable mentions go to...

While Emily's TikTok video won the top spot for this week, here are some other videos we just couldn't ignore.

Firstly, there was this guy that thought boiled eggs were called "bald" eggs (a classic mistake).
