Throwing it Back with iPod Nostalgia Because They’ve Been Discontinued (RIP)

Whose idea was it to put clips on them?🤦
It’s time to dig out the iPod shuffle you forgot you had, lay out some candles and perform a séance for this iconic generation of music devices.

The dying species won’t be re-stocked, and the only iPod still on sale (the Touch) is available “while supplies last”, according to Apple.
The iPod was released in 2001 and allowed you to carry 1,000 songs in your pocket. It evolved from there (for worse or for better) into varying styles, with varying sophistication.

Whether you owned one or not, you’re bound to recognise one of the throwbacks on this list.
Steve Jobs’ first announcement of the iPod.
Lo and behold: Steve in his black turtleneck, denim jeans, New Balance 992’s, and a PowerPoint presentation that looks like my Year Seven assignment on dinosaurs.
He casually holds up the first ever iPod at the end, to a room of shell-shocked tech journalists who break into applause. It’s one for the history books.

The ads.
Remember watching The Simpsons after school, sighing when the ad break came on but then boogieing to the legendary iPod ads?
The old logos.
When the iPod Touch was introduced, we got a suite of apps that could do more than just play music.
It was still limited, with no phone access, but suddenly the world became our oyster with games, photos, mail and YouTube. Thank goodness they changed the icons.

Using LimeWire to download music.
Of course, we had the iTunes Store, but if we wanted to be sneaky there were several ways around it.
We all felt like illegal pirates using LimeWire, and somehow it lasted for as long as it did. We owe the entire Spice Girls discography to this bad boy.

Whatever this was?
There was definitely a phase in which making technology smaller seemed like a good idea.
As a result, we all ran out and bought square devices that could barely fit under our thumbs.

The best thing to come out of it? This girl turning them into hair clips.
Long live the iPod and all its incarnations.
