This Year’s AFLW #1 Draft Pick Is 18-Year-Old Isabel Huntington from Melbourne Uni

Isabel Huntington has become the second ever #1 draft pick in the history of the AFL Women’s league.

Huntington, 18, was snapped up by the Western Bulldogs yesterday, though, according to AFL.com, Bulldogs coach Paul Groves and some colleagues broke the news to Izzy on her doorstep a night earlier.

Described as a “key forward who is versatile enough to play down back and through the midfield,” Huntington will be a key addition to the Bulldogs, which placed sixth on the ladder this season with just two wins.

Though she has been recovering from a torn ACL since September 2016, she returned to train with Melbourne Uni after rehab.

Fremantle, with the second pick of the draft, snapped up 21-year-old midfield Stephanie Cain, who they had delisted earlier this year. With the third pick, Collingwood scored 18-year-old forward Chloe Molloy.

This year’s AFLW draft has not been without controversy, following the league’s ruling against transgender player Hannah Mouncey.

Mouncey is still eligible to play in the AFL Canberra competition, but was considered ineligible for the AFLW. Many have come out against the league for their call, with Junkee noting that Mouncey meets the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines for transgender athletes’ eligibility.

The next season of the AFLW kicks off in February, where Adelaide will seek to repeat as Premiers.
