There Was a Very Important Reason for Shirtless Kylo Ren in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", Okay?

The thirst is strong with this one.

There’s apparently a reason for everything in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Even shirtless Kylo Ren.

The absolute mildest of spoiler warnings, for the sixteen of you who are yet to see The Last Jedi.

Though Johnson’s eighth entry in the Star Wars saga is certainly the funniest to date, you may have heard some nervous, sweaty, unintentional laughter from the audience during one scene in particular.

That would’ve been the moment Johnson’s camera hard-cuts to a shirtless Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), during one of his saucy, Force-activated Skype chats with Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Most on social media assumed the shot was simply to show-off Driver’s rig. And they were fine with that.

Turns out, it was actually an essential narrative device, okay?

In an interview with the Huffington Post, co-sound supervisors Matthew Wood and Ren Klyce (which almost feels like an anagram of Kylo Ren) revealed the essential reason Driver had to ditch the shirt.

"That was important to establish what [Rey] was actually seeing," Klyce said.

"Was she hearing his voice or seeing his face or just his eyes? And so that [shirtless scene] is to inform the audience, 'Oh, she can see his body.'"

So could viewers, BTW.
