Everything You Need To Know About Upcoming HBO Series "The Last of Us"

'When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light.'

Mark your calendars – there’s another TV series on the horizon for you to sink your teeth into.

The highly-anticipated video game adaptation of The Last of Us premieres next Monday at 1PM AEDT (10AM AWST/12.30PM ACDT), starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie.

You probably know Pascal most as the title character of The Mandalorian, as well as his roles in Game of Thrones, Wonder Woman 1984 and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (just to name a few). If you’re wondering why Ramsey may look familiar, their most recent work in His Dark Materials and Catherine Called Birdy , but you may remember them most for their iconic role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones.

Whether you’re a fan of the critically acclaimed game or are new to this post-apocalyptic world, here’s what you need to know before the premiere.

The show centres on survivor Joel who is hired to smuggle 14-year old Ellie out of a dangerous quarantine zone. Why? Ellie holds the key to the cure to a devastating outbreak that has destroyed modern civilization as we know it.

While video game adaptations have developed a reputation for being hit-and-miss, The Last of Us has some big names behind it. The writers and executive producers of the show include Craig Mazin of HBO’s Chernobyl as well as the creator of The Last of Us himself – Neil Druckmann.

The official trailer shows off the incredibly bleak, dangerous post-apocalyptic world as well as the looks at some of the various infected creatures, including the dreaded Clickers.

Eagle-eyed fans of the game were quick to find cameos of the original voice actors of Joel and Ellie, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, featured in the trailer. Not much has been said about Baker’s character in the show, but Johnson is confirmed to play Ellie’s mother Anna – a very poetic casting choice. I'm not crying, you are.

It will be exciting to see whether the The Last of Us series lives up to the hype and is able to deliver the emotional, action-packed, heartfelt story that the game is so well known for.
