The Eight Things We’re Not Being Taught Enough of in Schools

The Eight Things We’re Not Being Taught Enough of in Schools

School: Don't we all love it?

We are expected to learn a bunch of random things in such a short period of time, memorise it for an entire year and write it all down on a piece of paper during a crucial exam that will basically determine our whole future. (Don't freak out, you'll be okay.)

But are we learning the most necessary lessons?

The things we should be learning and that will be of good use is how to do our finances, how to pay bills and how to budget. Our generation is completely clueless when it comes to these crucial elements of adulthood and when it comes to the crunch, we completely freak the hell out!

Another thing that everyone should be taught is how to be healthy. With Australia being one of the leading countries in obesity, surely it raises red flags that kids aren't getting enough proper education on how to make healthy eating choices or the importance of engaging in regular physical activity.

Health is not a compulsory subject in all schools, although I strongly think it should be. This comes with sex education too; a simple short introductory session to periods isn't going to teach teenagers the risks of having unprotected sex and the challenges of becoming pregnant. This is extremely important information all students need to learn!

Furthermore, learning how to be respectful individuals is of great importance. Students share different sexual preferences and need to be supported by others to feel comfortable and safe within their school environment.

Bullying is an incredibly huge issue, as is self-harm and youth suicide. It is important for students to be aware of mental health issues and the impact bullying can have on their victims, as well as their victims’ families and friends.

It is also important for students to be aware of things they can do to get help if they or someone else needs it. Also, discussing the consequences of bullying is another important aspect, as authorities such as the police can get involved.

Fact is, there are so many troubles within our society that need to be addressed within schools. School is a massive platform where information can get out to a wide range of kids and help them combat the struggles of life and get them through adulthood. Learning about issues within our society and important aspects of growing up is just as important as learning a maths equation.
