"The Australian Dream" Is Now Streaming on ABC iView and Kayo, So Get On It

Because it’s never too late to discover this beauty.
As many have reiterated over the past few weeks, the Black Lives Matter movement is not merely an American concern. That’s why it was no surprise when young Indigenous Australians sought to host protests and rallies locally, which were attended and supported by people across many varied communities.
Nonetheless, there are still some down under—including those in positions of political power—who have tried to suggest that the issue of white supremacy is solely America’s. However, ESPN recently decided to program the Adam Goodes documentary The Australian Dream, introducing his plight within the AFL to viewers across the United States. Which is to say, the jig is most definitely up.
For those in Australia who missed The Australian Dream when it was released in 2019, the Daniel Gordon-directed doco is now available on Kayo in Australia, as an ESPN-branded feature.
The Australian Dream was also added to ABC iView this week, where it will remain free to stream until 21 August 2020.
The movie sees Sydney Swans legend and former Australian of the Year Goodes reckon with the racist taunts that caused him to abandon the game he once loved. Written by Stan Grant, the picture also places Goodes’ racial vilification within the context of the historical injustices faced by Indigenous Aussies.
NBA star Ben Simmons joined the film as a producer to help expand the reach of the film at the time.
We wrote in our five-star review, "The Australian Dream is shattering. And now, the illusion of our country can’t be unshattered." Still, in light of the George Floyd killing (and growing awareness of the deaths of countless other black men and women in police custody across both our nations), The Australian Dream has renewed relevance.

The picture's airing in on ESPN also comes as the AFL sees a spike in popularity in the US, being one of the few codes proceeding during COVID-19. Americans were shocked to see how Goodes was treated.
Never knew about the Australian Dream story, but this man just showed up in blackface on my tv and now I’m compelled to learn about it.

If you get the chance please watch The Australian Dream on ESPN. It’s eye opening to the rampant racism across the world. Many parallels can be made between US and Australian history/society

Here in Australia, there’s even more reason to revisit The Australian Dream, especially as Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is confronted with allegations of turning a blind eye to racism directed at Heritier Lumumba, which has now been reinforced by numerous other past players. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, a figure in the Goodes story, has also denied knowledge of Lumumba’s racist nickname.
As mentioned, if you want to watch The Australian Dream in Australia, it is available to stream on ABC iView until 21 August 2020, as well as on sports streaming service Kayo. It is also available on Apple, Google Play, YouTube and Microsoft Store to rent or buy. You can also grab the DVD. And if you want even more Goodes, you can see the archival footage-only doco The Final Quarter on Stan.
