The ATO Just Revealed the Top Paying Jobs in Australia and We’re Not Shocked

Hint: medical professionals make up most of the list.

We all know that doctors, CEOs and legal professionals make a lot of money, right? But unless you work in that industry, it's hard to know exactly how much that is.

Well, the ATO (Australian Tax Office) just released a heap of data from it’s 2018 – 2019 financial year, and have spilled the tea on Australia’s highest earners. Let's just say, they’re not surprising.

So, before we get into the exact details, you’ll also want to know how much the average Aussie makes. Right now, the average salary in Australia is $63,085, which is actually up $1,634 on last year—not too shabby.

However, the median salary in Australia is a slightly shabbier $52,732 a year, especially considering the highest paid workers in Australia almost make an eye-watering $400,000 a year. That's a big gap.

The ATO revealed that surgeons are at the top of the list, taking home about $394,303 on average.

This profession is closely followed by Anaesthetists and Internal Medicine Specialists, all hitting over the $300,000 mark. Who knew the top three would all be medical professionals?

Next up are Financial Dealers on $275,984, Psychiatrists on $235,558 and other Medical Professionals taking home about $222,933. Are you noticing a common theme here?

The rest of the list consists of a few other professions that you would likely expect: Legal Professionals, Mining Engineers, CEOs and Engineering Managers; they all clock over the $100,000 mark.

One thing to note is that Aussie politicians aren’t on the list, which is odd considering some of them take home more than $400,000 a year.

The data from the ATO also revealed the top-earning 10 postcodes by average taxable income. It's no surprise that NSW took out the most spots.

Australia’s boujiest suburb is Double Bay in Sydney, with an average taxable income of $202,598. The only suburbs with high earners that wasn’t from NSW or Victoria was Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove in WA, with workers earning an average of $179,376.
