Telstra Payphones Will Be Free This Christmas, So Everyone Can Get In Touch With Loved Ones

From Christmas Eve until December 28, all local, national and mobile calls from Telstra payphones will be free.

Telstra hopes that, by offering free calls, more people will be able to get in touch with loved ones this Christmas.

Stuart Bird, Telstra Executive Director Home and Business Products, said many of us are lucky enough to see, and speak, to loved ones in person, or through technological devices. That’s not the case for everyone.

Mr Bird says he hopes the Telstra initiative will help people separated from loved ones, without a way to get in touch.

Each December, Telstra records an increase in calls from payphones. Cathy Humphrey, CEO at Sacred Heart Mission, has encouraged people who haven’t contacted their loved ones in a while to take advantage of the free calls.

“Christmas can be an extremely tough time for many Australians who are either going through a difficult time themselves or are missing someone they love,” Ms Humphrey said.

“There are many reasons people might lose contact with friends and family,” she explained. By removing financial barriers, it’s hoped a big difference will be made.
