Oh Boy, A Teenager Was Filmed “Balcony Hopping” At Schoolies On Snapchat

Concerning footage has been revealed of a teenage girl “balcony hopping” at a Gold Coast hotel while celebrating Schoolies.

The video shows a girl climbing around the edge of a balcony, several floors up, at the Beachcomber Resort at Surfers Paradise. According to the Courier Mail, it was shared to Snapchat overnight.

You can hear one friend laugh from behind the camera; another can be heard saying, “this isn’t going to be funny when she falls”.

The incident happened on the second night of Schoolies, where there was a large spike in the number of people hospitalised. Although, according to police officers and Red Frog workers, “the first two nights have been the quietest in recent memory.”

Most hospitalisations were for things like intoxication and stepping on broken glass.

The Beachcomber Resort had previously closed their balconies over fears of teenagers harming themselves. Just four years ago, a 17-year-old girl fell to her death from a balcony on Tower Three of the Chevron Renaissance complex.

The incident sparked a new policy to lock all balconies during the week of celebrations, though the Beachcomber decided to reopen theirs in 2014, reportedly after receiving complaints from teenagers.

Inspector Bruce Kuhn has said police will act immediately if anyone is found involved in balcony hopping. "If someone is observed to climb between balconies police can charge those involved with the offence of unregulated high risk activity," he warned.

Seriously though, balcony hopping just screams "bad idea". It's a no brainer: just don't do it.
